Self-Reliance

Scripture:

2 Corinthians 3:5

Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.

2 Corinthians 12:9

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.

Reflection:

Today I choose to fast from the wound of self-reliance.

Modern western culture often has a high view of independence. We strive to become self-sufficient so that we do not need to rely on anyone for anything. We can feel guilt or shame when asking others for help, as if doing so somehow diminishes our worth.

Although independence is not inherently bad, when it extends too far it can damage our relationships, including our relationship with God. In fact, self-sufficiency can be a form of self-neglect of our hearts and souls. Over-relying on our own strength and skills is a refusal of God’s grace and power in our lives, and it stops us from recognizing our need for God.

Questions for Personal Reflection:

In what areas of my life am I most tempted to be overly reliant on myself? (Work, Finances, Family, Friendships, Personal Activities etc.)

What am I afraid will happen if I become dependent on God in that area of my life?

Prayer:

Talk to God about the areas of your life that you thought about above. Share your fears, worries and doubts. Ask God to show you what small steps you can take today to trust Him more with those areas of your life.
