Self-Promotion

Scripture:

Luke 14:11

For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Reflection:

Today I choose to fast from the wound of self-promotion.

We often struggle with waiting, particularly when we are waiting for big things that we want to see in our lives. Even more so when those things are things we think we deserve - that promotion at work, the award for our efforts at school or in sports, the next step in our relationship or recognition from valued peers.

When we’re waiting for these things, we’re often tempted to practice self-promotion as a way to hasten the coming of those things we think we should already have. We’re even tempted to self-promotion around things that are good like our vocation and relationships. And yet, as Luke 14:11 reminds us, self-promotion is the exact opposite of the way of Jesus. Christ calls us to humility, patience and perseverance even when things seem unfair. When we choose this road of humility, we will find that God meets us in waiting and longing, ready to meet our deep needs.

Questions for Personal Reflection:

In what areas of my life do I feel like I’m waiting for something that I deserve? Have I experienced a temptation to self-promote in those areas?

What is the deeper need that I am hoping to satisfy through my self-promotion? How can God meet that need?

Prayer:

Talk to God about the areas of your life where you are most tempted to rush ahead of His plan through self-promotion. Share your worries, fears and deep longings. If you are frustrated because things seem to take too long or are unfair, share that. God can handle all of your emotions. Ask God to meet the deeper needs of your heart.
