Doubt
Scripture:
2 Timothy 1:7
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
John 20:27
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
Reflection:
Today I choose to fast from the wound of doubt.
We tend to use the word “doubt” quite casually. We say things like “I doubt that is going to happen. There are some games where sowing doubt amongst your opponents is an important strategy. But if we don’t take doubt seriously, it can quickly go from innocent wondering to paralyzing uncertainty.
Doubt can be an important part of the journey of faith if we use it to cultivate a curiousity that leads us into conversation with God and others. While Thomas is often looked down upon for his doubt, he doesn’t allow his doubt to keep him away from Christ. In fact, by talking about it and bringing it to Jesus, Thomas sees his doubt transformed into an incredible encounter with the risen Christ. Similarly, our doubt can propel us into action rather than feeding confusion that leaves us paralyzed.
Questions for Personal Reflection:
What causes doubt in my life?
How can I allow my doubts to move me into closer relationship with God and others?
Prayer:
Share your doubts with God. Don’t be afraid - God can handle all of your doubts, confusion and questions. Nothing will change God’s love and faithfulness towards you. Pray that God would show you the way through doubt and perhaps ask for wisdom to know who else you can talk to about your doubts and questions.
