Confusion

Scripture:

1 Corinthians 14:33

For God is not a God of disorder but of peace—as in all the congregations of the Lord’s people.

James 1:5

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Reflection:

Today I choose to fast from the wound of confusion.

If sloth is the fruit of a tree, then confusion is the tree’s first root. In other words, sloth is our reaction to being confused. Confusion happens inside of us, but sloth is the visible consequence.

We all know what it’s like to feel confused. Often it can feel like a disorientation or a heavy fog, we just don’t know which way to go. Confusion can happen in our body, our mind or our heart. It will keep us looking back and forth without ever taking a step. Confusion can cause us to make poor decisions, but just as often it prevents us from making any decision. In that way, confusion leads directly to sloth. But, as James 1:5 reminds us, God is ready to generously provide wisdom in the face of any confusing circumstance - we only need to ask.

Questions for Personal Reflection:

How do I tend to react when I experience confusion?

In what areas of my life do I need more of God’s wisdom?

Prayer:

Talk to God about any areas of your life that are currently causing confusion. Ask questions, share your doubts, fears and uncertainties. Ask God to provide wisdom in the areas that you most need it. Don’t forget to take time to listen for God’s voice and wisdom - through thoughts, Scripture or others.
